In collaboration with Pikangikum First Nation and Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, Lakehead University has undertaken reconnaissance surveys on several lake systems in the boreal forest of northwestern Ontario. These surveys have focused on the investigation of localities identified by Aboriginal Elders of Pikangikum First Nation as being important in their traditional land use practices. Some of these localities contain material culture dating to the past century while others yield objects dating back at least 2000 years. This suggests a significant time depth and continuity to Aboriginal land use in this region.
