I Know Exactly Where I am: Using GPS in Archaeology

Luke D.A.L.L.A. BONA

Abstract

In February and March of 1992, a global positioning system device (GPS) was evaluated for use by arch-aeologists in the heavy bush of northern Ontario. Archacological site locations were visited in and around the City of Thunder Bay. Locational readings were taken using the GPS device and these readings were compared with existing site records. The GPS was evaluated in a variety of terrain and vegetation settings for accuracy of the locational readings, ease of use and (important for archaeologists) durability.
